Video editing and finished-video export
The editor combines video, audio, and subtitles into a finished video. Current editing workspaces belong to a specific project and episode, with the editing document and media stored in the cloud. Older drafts stored only in your current browser need a separate migration.
Before you start
- Sign in, confirm access to the project and episode, and make sure editor access is enabled.
- Viewing and editing are controlled separately. Importing media, editing the timeline, and creating versions require editor write access and a writable project.
- A closed project allows viewing an existing edit but prevents editing and exporting a new video to the project. Archived or inaccessible projects cannot be editing targets.
- Local MP4 export requires WebCodecs support; desktop Chrome or Edge is recommended. Saving a video to the project also requires project export permission and available cloud export service.
1. Open the episode's editing workspace
- Open your project from the project list, enter the target episode, and choose the open editor action.
- If you open the editor directly without a complete context, select a project and episode first, then open the editor.
- Check the project, episode, and current version in the header. The first visit to a writable episode creates or opens its primary edit.
Returning through the same episode opens its primary edit again. Use the version selector in the header to open another version. Keep media and workspaces within their correct project and episode rather than changing URL identifiers.
2. Import media and add it to the timeline
The media panel offers three sources:
| Source | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Local | Upload video or audio from your computer and view imported workspace media |
| Works | Import media from existing works you can access |
| Project assets | Reuse assets from the current project |
For works and project assets, switch between the current episode and the current project. If media is missing, check the selected scope and the episode it belongs to.
- Upload local files or import the target media from an online list. Wait for uploading and media loading to finish.
- Double-click imported media to append it, or drag it to an appropriate timeline track.
- Preview a short section and confirm that the picture, sound, and duration are correct before trimming.
The local picker accepts video and audio. Common supported formats include MP4, MOV, WebM, MP3, WAV, AAC, and OGG; playback still depends on the actual codecs in the file. Follow the file size limit shown on the page. Resolve unavailable media or incomplete media metadata before exporting.
3. Edit the timeline and subtitles
- Drag a clip to change its start time and drag its edges to trim it. To split it, place the playhead at the cut, select the clip, and use the split action.
- Use snapping to align clip boundaries and the playhead. Enable ripple editing when you want later clips to move with an edit.
- Select a clip and use its inspector to adjust speed, volume, fades, or visual settings. Unlock a locked track before editing it.
- Add text from the text or captions area, or import an SRT file. Check the wording, timing, and position. Exporting SRT creates a subtitle file rather than a rendered video.
- Review transitions between clips, subtitles, and audio synchronization in the preview before exporting.
Useful shortcuts include Space for play or pause, S to split, D to duplicate a clip, Delete to remove it, and Ctrl/Cmd + Z to undo. Open the editor's shortcut help for the full list. Finish editing a text field before using timeline shortcuts.
The editor can preview and edit effects, transitions, and keyframes. Whether these can be saved as a video to the project depends on the current cloud export profile.
4. Save and manage versions
Changes are saved automatically. The cloud badge identifies a cloud workspace, but you must still check its save status. Queued, saving, or offline recovery saved does not mean your latest changes have reached the cloud.
- Wait for saved status before leaving or continuing on another device.
- To try a different edit, open workspace actions and copy the current edit as a new version. The editor saves first, then duplicates and opens the version.
- When several versions exist, switch between them with the version selector. Both the primary edit and its versions belong to this project and episode.
- The archive version action applies to additional versions and returns you to the primary edit. Archiving is not an undo action.
If you return with unsaved changes, use the prompt to save and leave, keep editing, or discard changes.
5. Migrate an older local draft
If this browser contains an older draft that has not been assigned to a project or episode, open workspace actions and migrate a draft. Select the source draft and migrate it as a version.
Migration copies the document, uploads local media as needed, and creates a version in the current cloud episode. The original local draft is retained. This action lists only valid, unassigned drafts in the current browser. It cannot retrieve the original draft after switching browsers or devices, or clearing browser data.
If migration fails, retain the source draft and local media, then check the network, missing media, and upload limits. Older local drafts and current cloud workspaces are separate data. The local media tab or an offline recovery status does not mean a draft migration has completed.
6. Choose an export method
Open the finished-video export dialog and choose from the capabilities available on the page.
| Method | Result and requirements |
|---|---|
| Download locally | Render an MP4 in the current browser and download it; requires a supported browser and readable source media |
| Save to project | Render on the server and save to the current project and episode; requires permission, cloud service, and sufficient credits |
Download locally
- Choose the output resolution and confirm that the timeline is not empty.
- Start exporting and keep the page open while remote media is read and rendering completes.
- Download the MP4 and play it back before closing the page.
Downloading a local export does not automatically add it to project assets. The current duration limit is 10 minutes, and the browser output size limit is 600 MiB. Reduce resolution or duration if the page reports a size or memory limit.
Save to project
- Enter a title and choose the output resolution. The current profile is the standard rough-cut export.
- Submit the save-to-project action. The editor saves the workspace, prepares sources, requests a quote, and submits the render task. Actual charges follow server pricing and task processing.
- Follow the queued, fetching media, rendering, uploading, and saving stages.
- After success, download the result, open the work, or open the episode asset to check its project and episode association.
The current cloud profile supports one populated video track, audio tracks, trimming and speed changes, basic volume, fades, and default subtitles, up to 10 minutes. Multiple populated video tracks, enabled effects, keyframes, masks, non-default visual transforms, transitions other than fades, and custom subtitle colors or font sizes may be rejected.
Use browser export when you need to retain complex effects. For a cloud export, copy a version before simplifying unsupported content. If only local download is available, the page has no usable project export capability; check authorization or contact an administrator.
Troubleshooting
- Workspace cannot open: Confirm your sign-in state, the project and episode, and editor access. Follow the page actions to reload your account, recheck authorization, or choose the target again.
- Saving fails or only offline recovery is saved: Keep the page open, restore connectivity, and retry. Wait for saved status before closing. Offline recovery depends on the current browser.
- Cloud version conflict: Another session saved an update. Reloading the cloud version adopts that content. To retain your current changes, save them as a new version; the editor opens it after success.
- Media cannot be read or export fails: Check media playback and reimport missing sources. Review the cloud export profile for unsupported features. Resolve credit, permission, or project status errors before retrying.
- Export still processing: Reopen the export panel for that episode to check the task. Confirm the original result before submitting another export.
What you will have afterwards
The episode has a cloud primary edit and versions that you can continue editing. Browser export produces a local MP4. A successful project export also provides links to the work and episode asset so you can organize or reuse the finished video.
